We Know You’re a Rebel, But Don’t Break Facebook’s New Cover Photo Rules

Thankfully for all you social media rebels out there, gone are the days of days of limitations on a company’s Facebook cover photo (we know you broke all those rules already).  Recently, CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his team rid away with cover photo rules that included not allowing contact information, price and purchasing information, or even calls to action, among others.

So now the ball is in your court.  The main rule that still remains is that Facebook cover photos cannot be more than 20% worth of text.  And since is should be an eye-catching, creative photo anyways, that should not be a problem.

How Did Comedy Central Pull Off the World’s First Virtual Festival?

Festivals of all kinds are uber hot right now. Tech and startup “festivals” such as SXSW are becoming all the rage.  Art festivals have been popular events for years and years.  And of course, two or three-day music festivals continue to sprout like pimples on greasy teenager.

Most festivals require a central location, venue or a large, open (usually muddy) field. SXSW takes place in Austin, Texas. Sundance Film Festival takes place in Park City, Utah.  Middle of the Map Fest takes place in Kansas City.  That’s how festivals work.  But Comedy Central changed the festival norm this month by making them go...digital.

Why Does the Brain Enjoys Snackable Content Over a Full Meal?

Our attention spans are shot. They’re now clocking in at about a full tweet. So yes, I will commend you if you make to the end of this short article. We are growing more and more impatient as we progress as a culture. And as technology becomes faster, we must adapt to its ever-changing speed in order to keep up. Otherwise, we fall prey to becoming the person that doesn’t get “The Facebook” or “The Twitter”.

This need to adapt isn’t limited to just individuals; in fact, the individuals aren’t the real worry here. Individuals will eventually adapt (heck, my Grandma uses Facebook more than I do!).

Twitter’s New Discovery App #Music is...Meh.

twittermusic

Everybody listens to music one way or another—whether it’s Top 40 or some indie band you’re “the first to know about”. Music, and music sharing, is one of the pillars of our culture.  Music can set a tone for your entire day. This isn’t some secret—it is common knowledge. Everyone on the planet enjoys music and talks about it...sometimes constantly (oxy moron alert!).

It is because of this obvious truth that Twitter launched a new web- and iOS-based app with the focus of music discovery across the masses of the Twittersphere.  The app is ever so eloquently called #music.

What's the Best Way to React to Tragedy on Social Media? (2)

Last week’s Boston bombings were a tragedy for the nation. Though everything seemed to move in slow motion while watching the events unfold on live television, the Internet was in hyper-drive. Reddit was buzzing with hundreds of threads and thousands of comments searching for clues. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram were overloaded with pictures of Boston’s chaos (and later, Boston’s empty streets). Overall, social media became a place to share our joint outrage, sadness, confusion and pursuit of clues in the name of justice.

Except for Guy Kawasaki’s Twitter account.

What’s the Best Web Host for My Website?

When it comes to running a website, the most important decision you will make is what domain name to use (just ask Who Represents, otherwise known as whorepresents.com, or these other poorly named domains). After choosing a domain, it’s time to make the second most important decision regarding site ownership – choosing a web host. If a domain is like owning plans for building a house, the domain host is like choosing where to actually build the house. Let’s take a look at some of the more well- and lesser-known web hosts to see which one may be right for you!

First of all, what is web hosting?

Before we begin, let’s talk about web hosting. While this subject is definitely one of the more technical aspects of running a website, it’s one of the most important. A web host is the server your website will be physically stored on, so whenever someone types in your domain, they are accessing the information on a server in a physical location. While the location doesn’t matter – your host can be based in LA, New York, the cloud or elsewhere – the server capacity, and how much bandwidth and disk space you are allowed, does. These things affect your site speed and overall performance, which can make or break your blog, site or business. The most common types of web hosting are:
